Selective Breeding Flashcards
What is selective breeding?
When a living organism is artificially selected by a human and being bred with another living organism in order to give off the best features/offspring
(Plant or animal)
Why do farmers breed plants and animals?
-for maximum yield
(Meat, milk, grain)
- good health and disease resistant
- other qualities dependent on the farmer (temperament, speed, attractiveness)
How do you breed a living organism?
From your stock, select the 2 living organism that satisfies the features you want them to have
Breed them
Select the best out of the offspring
Breed the offspring
Continue for several generations
(The same gene is remained in the population)
What is inbreeding?
Farmers breeding a living organisms that are closely related
What are the disadvantages of selective breeding?
Reduces the gene pool - the number of different alleles (forms of a gene) therefore keep on having the same gene in all animals
Inbreeding causes health problem (by developing genetic disorders) - only happens when 2 alleles are the same and have a condition (when they are recessive) - if breeding closely related living organism, the chance increases as the alleles are the same
- if a disease appears, all of them will die as there is not much variation in the population
