Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose
Energy cannot be used directly by cells, therefore what substance does energy make instead?
ATP
What is the job of ATP
Acts as an energy source that transport energy to a cell
What is respiration controlled by?
Enzymes
This is why the rate of respiration is affected by the temperature and pH
What are the 2 types of respiration?
Aerobic
Anaerobic
What is an aerobic respiration?
Respiration that involves oxygen in it
Most effective way to release energy from glucose
What is the word equation for an aerobic respiration ?
Glucose + oxygen
-->
Carbon dioxide + water
(+energy)
What is the symbolic equation for aerobic respiration ?
C6H12O6 + 6O2
→
6CO2 + 6H2O (+ energy)
What happens when the rate of respiration increases? (Not enough to turn into an anaerobic respiration though)
The consumption of oxygen and production of carbon dioxide increases.
What is an anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen
What are the disadvantage of anaerobic respiration?
You do not get as much energy from the glucose (unlike aerobic respiration)
Causes pain in muscles
Causes fatigue
Lactic acid is produced
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose
->
Lactic acid (+energy)
How can glucose produce lactic acid?
The glucose gets PARTIALLY broken down which produces energy but also lactic acid
Why do we breath really fast when lactic acid is produced in our muscles?
A lot of oxygen is needed to break down the lactic acid, therefore fast breathing is needed for more oxygen.
And allow aerobic respiration again
How can lactic acid be broken down?
It is broken down by being taken to the liver.
Firstly oxygen is needed in order to respirate aerobically. Then lactic acid will go down to the liver to be broken down
