Function Of Blood Flashcards
How does plasma look like?
Is it a pale yellow liquid substance
What is the plasma’s job?
Do carry around everything that needs to be carried around the body
Where is plasma found?
In the blood
What does plasma carry around the body?
There are 7 types of substances
- red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
- water
- amino acids and glucose (digested food products)
- carbon dioxide
- urea (urine) from liver to kidney
- hormones (chemical messengers)
- antibodies (proteins in the body’s immune system)
What is the red blood cell’s job?
To carry oxygen around the body
What shape do red blood cells have and why?
Have a biconcave shape (like doughnuts)
To give a large surface area to volume ratio for absorbing and releasing oxygen
What do red blood cells contain?
Haemoglobin which contains a lot of iron
Which is what gives the blood its colour red
What is it called when haemoglobin combines with oxygen?
Oxyhaemoglobins
What do red blood cells not have unlike other cells and why?
Do not have a nucleus
More space for haemoglobin (therefore can carry more oxygen)
Why is good for red blood cells to be flexible?
To pass through tiny capillaries very easily
