Cells Flashcards
What is a nucleus?
Something that contains DNA in the form of chromosomes
What is a cell membrane?
Something that hold the cell together and decides what goes in and out of the cell
What is a ribosome?
Something where most of the protein synthesis reaction occurs (where proteins are synthesised)
What is a cytoplasm?
Where most of the chemical reaction happens
It is a gel-like substance
What is the mitochondria?
Where most of the reactions that involve RESPIRATION happens
What does respiration produce?
Energy
Where does respiration reactions take place?
In the mitochondria
Why do liver cells need a lot of mitochondria?
Metabolic reaction takes place there
Metabolic reactions demand a lot of energy
Why do muscle cells demand a lot of mitochondria?
Because they need a lot of energy to be able to contract
Contraction permits them to move (this is how biceps and triceps work, they contract which allows the bones to move)
What are the structures that plant cells contain which animal cells do not?
Vacuole
Cell wall
Chloroplast
What is a chloroplast
Where photosynthesis happens
What is a vacuole
It contains cell sap
(A weak solution of sugar and salt)
Takes up a large volume of the cell
(90%)
What is a cell wall?
It is made out of cellulose
Supports the cell
What makes bacteria cells different that animal or plant cells ?
They do not have a proper nucleus as their nucleus is one a SINGLE CIRCULAR STRAND OF DNA
The DNA floats freely in the cytoplasm
Do not have mitochondria or chroloplast
What do bacteria cells have in common with plant cells?
They contain:
Cytoplasm
DNA (single circular strand)
Cell wall
Cell membrane
