Stroke
Infection
Brain tumour
Drug withdrawal
Eclampsia
Absence seizures signs + symptoms
Blank stare
Momentary lapse of consciousness
Rapid blinking
Jerking movement of the hand/arm
Absence seizure treatment
Remove objects from vicinity
Ensure bystanders move away
Stay with them until they’ve recovered
Advise them to contact their G.P.
Major epilepsy signs + symptoms
Light headedness/dizziness
Loss of consciousness
Loud moaning
Convulsions
Twitching of limbs
Violent shaking of the extremities
Eyes rolling back/closed
Contraction of the jaw
Incontinence
Major epilepsy treatment - Don’ts
Try to restrain them
Put something in their mouth
Leave them until they’re recovered
Major epilepsy treatment - Do’s
Remove any object that could cause harm
Support head
Ask bystanders to move away
Time the seizure
Major epilepsy treatment - If the patient vomits
Turn their head to the side
Major epilepsy treatment - If it’s a child with a fever
Cool them
Major epilepsy treatment - Call an ambulance if
It’s their 1st seizure
It lasts over 5 mins#
They stop breathing
