Rules for bandaging
Explain your actions + reassure patient
Patient is comfy

Bandages run under natural hollows eg. neck
Reef knot
Commonly used to secure bandages, when tied it doesn’t slip, is comfy + easy to untie
Crepe bandage use
Supports sprains/strains
Elasticated bandage use
Support sprains + strains, hold dressings in place + treat fractures
Open-weave bandage use
Hold dressings in place, ventilation. Doesn’t apply pressure/support wounds
Figure 8 bandage use
Restricts joint movement of the hand, elbow, knee + ankle
How to apply a figure 8 bandage
Place gauze between the fingers/toes around the bony area/in hollow areas e.g. palm
Carry roller bandage up diagonally + around the joint
Wrap bandage around the limb above the joint with a circular wrap
Carry the roller bandage down + across the joint diagonally behind the fingers/toes + up diagonally across the joint behind the wrist/ankle + down diagonally to overlap the wrap
Continue up + down until the hand/foot
Apply circular wrap above the joint + secure with safety pin/tape
Check capillary refill
Application of scalp bandage
Place the base of the bandage above the eyebrows, draped over the head
Wrap the ends of the bandage around the patient’s head + tuck the base over the ears
Cross the ends at the nape of the neck, carry to the front of their head + tie a reef knot
Tuck the remaining material under the knot
Support their head + draw down the point to tighten the bandage
Application of bandages to a wound with an embedded object
Place dressing around the object
keep dressings in place + support object w/ unfolded bulky dressings over wound dressing
Secure in place with bandage avoiding pressure on the object
Elevate, arrange for transport + don’t let them eat/drink
Arm sling
Raise injured arm + place the bandage with its base parallel to their body
Base should go further than their little finger
Pass bandage end under injured arm + over shoulder, around the neck to other shoulder
Bring the other end over the forearm + meet the other end at the shoulder
Tie with a reef knot + took free end into the bandage
