What is MRI
Powerful magnets excite water molecules in human tissue, which is detected using very sensitive radio frequency coil
Slices of body
Much better soft tissue visualisation than xray and ct
How does MRI work?
L Proton nuclei detected
Magnets align the nuclei & put them in excited state
Passes radio frequency waves through specific to hydrogen which causes
Aligned nuclei to shift 90° (resonance)
When radio frequencyremoved nuclei back to original state& release energy which is recorded
Computer draws image
Nobel for MRI
2003 Peter Mansfield
First full body MRI
Mark 1 - in Aberdeen
Ultrasound
Identifies structures using sound waves
Bioluminescent imaging
Bioluminescent markers to identify structures within body
Mainly research based
Sensitive cameras can detect light generated by proteins: GFP and luciferase
Bioluminescent imaging
Bioluminescent markers to identify structures within body
Mainly research based
Angiography
Visualises blood vessels in livingtissue
FMRI
. Identifies regions of tissue thatare biologically active
Neural activity
Active cells = more O2 consumption
Ultrasound - Scotland
Donald & willocks
Glasgow maternity
Echocardiography
Uses Doppler effect
Can be 2D or 3D.
Identify problems & minimal invasive techniques can-be used.
Doppler effect
Stationary - sound wares all same length
Moving: shorter infront and longer behind
