The Great Man Theory
-Leaders inherit specific traits that enable them to be effective
Social learning theory
-Suggest that development of leader are learnt and due to environmental influences
> States that there cant be any natural characteristics
Interationist theory
-Both natural inherited factors as well as influences from the environment are taken into account
Leadership styles
- Authoritarian (Task centred)
- Democratic (Relationship centred)
- Laissez faire
Authoritarian (Task centred)
When is it effective?
Little/no input from the member of the group
- When the situation is dangerous
- There is limited amount of time
- Large group
- Quick decisions need to be made
- Novice performers
Democratic (Relationship centred)
When is it effective?
Encourages diccussion, so the players are more involved in the decision making. But the final decision Is made by then leader
- When time isn’t limited
- Consultation is required
- Experienced or highly skilled players
- Smaller groups
Selection of leaders
PRESCRIBED
- Appointed to lead by a higher authority
- e.g. captain of a football team
EMERGENT
-Individual become a leader bases on support from within the team
What does the favourableness of a situation depend on
- The relationship between the leader and the group
- Leader’s position of power
- Task structure
