At the beginning of the revolution, some states of America were ruled by another country. How many states were ruled and by what country?
Britain ruled over 13 states. These states were known as “The colonies”.
Give 2 causes of the American Revolution.
1) The British wanted to tax the colonies for the military support it gave them. The colonists objected saying that they shouldn’t have to pay tax because the British had no representation in their parliament (“No taxation without representation”).
2) The British killed 5 Boston locals who jeered at them. This was known as the Boston massacre and created an anti-British feeling.
Another cause of the Revolution was the first continental congress. Where was it held and what did the colonists decide at it?
The 1st continental congress was held in Philadelphia. At it, the colonists demanded an end to taxation and some even wanted independence.
Where and how did the American war of independence begin?
The war began in Lexington and concord when Americans ambushed British troops.
After the ambush, where were the Americans drove from?
Bunker hill
On what date did the Americans make their Declaration of Independence?
4th of July 1776
What two states did the British capture?
New York and Philadelphia
What event occurred in the winter of 1777-1778?
The American forces, led by George Washington, retreated to Vally Forge. Many men died and the Americans were facing defeat.
What event turned the war in the colonists favour?
Following an American victory at Saratoga the French joined the war on the side of the colonists. The French brought fresh and experienced troops to the war.
In what year and at what battle did the Americans win the war?
The battle of Yorktown, 1781
Give 2 reasons why the Americans won the war.
1) The great and capable leadership of the American army commander-in-chief, George Washington.
2) The intervention of the French after the battle of Saratoga.
Explain 2 ways in which the American war of independence helped cause the French Revolution.
1) French soldiers who fought in the war liked the idea that the people should rule the country as opposed to their king (democracy). They brought this idea back to France with them.
2) France’s intervention in the American war of independence was very costly and put the king’s government into a lot of debt which caused a lot of hardship for the people of France.
When and where was George Washington born?
Washington was born in Virginia in 1732
What happened to Washington at the age of 20?
He inherited his father’s estate of 8000 acres and 50 black slaves.
Washington then joined the army, name to countries/people he fought against.
