Give 4 reasons why Mussolini was popular.

A

1) He used propaganda to portray himself as a powerful and caring leader.
2) He set up the public works: building new motorways and draining marches to provide employment.
3) Powerful businessmen liked his banning of trade unions and persecution of communists.
4) Mussolini signed the Lateran treaty with the pope which set up the Vatican state in Rome. In doing this Mussolini won the support of the Catholic Church.

A

1) A war against Ethiopia
2) He sent 50’000 troops to the aid of Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco in the Spanish civil war.
3) He signed the Rome-Berlin Axis with hitter in 1936. He entered WWII in 1940 and was executed in 1945 in Milan by anti-fascist fighters.

How did WWI effect Italy?

A

Although Italy was on the winning side of the war, they were negativity effected:

  • They didn’t like the treaty of Versailles; they thought they deserved more land.
  • Unemployment and inflation was high.
  • The government was corrupt.
