Q

Describe a second movement Larbi does on his own in the box and link back to style and themes

A

-he goes into a one handed handstand with his legs crouched pressed against the side of the box. He then lifts his legs so they’re against the top of the box now, extending the other arm flat along the side of the box. He then flips his body over lowering one leg down whilst extending the other one up into an almost split position
-extreme yoga and contortion as shows arm strength and core strength and control as well as leg flexibility
-Larbi is in a different orientation being upside down as he looks out to the audience and this could show how being at the temple gave him a new outlook on life and a new perspective. This is therefore what allowed his creativity to return

Q

Describe a movement that Larbi and Dong Dong do together in the box linking to what features of his style are shown and how it links to the themes

A

-once Dong Dong is lowered down into the box stood in front of Larbi, he looks up at him and Larbi lifts his left leg up so his foot is pressed against the top, and then DD still watching Larbi lifts his right leg resting it on the side of the box. He reaches up and tries to reach Larbi’s leg
-once Dong Dong entered the box the violin begins playing along with the piano creating a more full sound to the music reflecting the fullness of the box
-shows yoga and contortion through extreme leg flexibility
-mirroring one another with a different leg up looks like it’s showing how their 2 lives have crossed each other/ how they found each other, east vs west in lifestyle and culture. The fact Dong Dong copies Larbi also shows their learner and teacher relationship

Q

Give a movement that Larbi and Dong Dong do together in the box which shows a mirror image and give the interpretation

A

-Larbi is lay on his back and has his legs stretched upwards along the back of the box. Dong Dong is stood on top of Larbi’s feet and holding on to the side of the box has his upper back pressed against the top of the box, creating a mirror image.
-this could again show their relationship and bond, with Larbi supporting Dong Dong but also east vs west because they are both looking at each other, and it could be how they are learning about one another’s culture and lifestyle whilst supporting each other
