Section 4- War Flashcards
How does Larbi move when the boxes are rearranged into a cat walk?
-he walks backwards as the boxes slot together behind him, then he turns around to walk off the boxes and circles around to his box with the mini replicas DSR, changing their formation
Describe some of the Kung fu movements that the monks perform in their quick reverting canon and the imagery this evokes
-movements include forwards punches, forwards kicks of the leg slapping their shins, and flying jumping kicks off the boxes. They continually travel to stage left and then stage right in this reverting canon pattern
-the snaking in and out of formation resembles the snake like movement of a Chinese dragon. The title of the music is therefore called dragon too.
-shows sources of movement of Kung Fu, recycling of energy from life to death, sutra as a thread, what one monk does the others follow
What is the young monks reaction when he is released from underneath the box and what does he do once the boxes have changed formation?
-Dong Dong looks around the stage walking over to Larbi all confused, but then he suddenly runs, gives a shout and performs a long series of back handsprings down the centre of the boxes
-could also show the recycling or release of energy, freedom and containment, he was restricted inside the box and so his energy built up leading to his sudden outburst, also very childlike thing to do
Describe how the monks reorganise the boxes?
-one by one, the monks stand at opposite sides of the boxes, then in a canon push them forwards so they are stood on their ends vertically to create 2 straight lines, with the openings facing inwards. They then slide the boxes together to create 1 straight line after Dong Dong has flipped through them.
What movement/ formations do the monks do once the boxes are in 1 vertical line?
-monks create a v with peak US, and one line of monks are in a side lunge with their arms lifted, the others in a side lunge with their hands in fists. The V shape then flips and the monks assume another side lunge position, with one side facing Us with arms hidden in fists, and the other side doing punches outwards
How is humour created in this section?
-one of the monks falls out from the line of boxes and he staggers dramatically. Humour is used to create contrast from the intensity of the Kung fu movement and surprise the audience
What does Dong Dong do once the monks are in the boxes and one has fallen out?
-He jumps on top of the boxes and walks across the top. After the monk performs an explosive Kung Fu sequence finishing in a side lunge with the hands in fists, DD copies and makes fists with his hands too copying the older monk
-this shows the idea of a thread, the older monk showing the younger monk the Kung Fu movement
Analyse how the lone monk behaves towards Larbi and why
-he slowly walks over to him DSR and swipes the mini wooden boxes off of Larbi’s grey metal box in a dramatic way. He then drags Larbi’s box in front of the line of boxes, with the open end facing DS, and the monk watches Larbi enter the box
-could be the monk teaching Larbi their techniques, cultural language barrier means they have to communicate physically, or could be Intergrating Larbi into the monks making him one of them
