Section 17- Temple Flashcards
Describe some of the movements that the monks perform under the archways
-deep plié in second facing DS
-kick the leg forwards and slap the shin
-stood one one leg with the leg raised flexed at the knee, flexed wrists
What type of movement do the monks next perform?
-tai chi, very slow Kung Fu scooping palms upwards then pushing them down
-shows serenity and peace within the temple juxtaposing intensity
Why is tai chi movement performed frequently throughout the work?
To remind the audience that the monks practice and culture isn’t always physical and fighting attackers, also about self reflection and connection of the mind and body
Why do the monks pause in still static positions in between continuous passages of movement?
-Larbi’s interest in juxtaposing intensity with serenity to emphasise and exaggerate this, showing the versatility of the monks and broad range of training
Describe a movement the monks do showing their connection to the ground
-they crouch down to the floor and skim their hands across the stage
-shows their connection to the ground and life and new growth
What is Dong Dong doing in this section?
-he sits and observes watching from DSR
-suggests he is still learning the practice, reminder he is a young monk
Explain the transition into the next section and interpret it
-a scale is played on the piano before the aural setting goes silent and the monks turn around to look at the temple. They knock over the temple of boxes, and they all fall to the ground except for Larbi’s metal box which is still standing. The monks then quickly pick up a box and drags them into position for the next section
-this could show how Larbi has found his inner strength and can withstand the greater level of pressure once again. Shows east vs west as the metal ‘stronger and better constructed’ box remains stood up representing capitalism and consumerism
