Describe how and why the first monk appears in section 2 Pond
-Larbi using the gunshu he just found is stood on top of the box frames and after walking around balancing, he lowers the stick forwards into the box, and a monk holds the other end of the gunshu and sits up so his head can be seen, then is pulled by by Larbi to stand. Larbi jumps off the boxes and with the stick in the palm of his hand causes the monk to perform big body circles who’s holding the other end.
-this could be interpreted as the transferring of energy or recycling of energy between life and death (a starting point), also east vs west as Larbi may be seen as manipulating the monk using his western authority
Describe some of the movements that the monk performs doing the Drunken Fist Kung fu technique and link back to themes/ starting points
-he staggers around the tops of the boxes and then suddenly spins stick around in a horizontal motion above the head before sticking it down and across either side of the body lifting one knee up at a time. Larbi is stood just observing the monk.
-the theory behind this technique is that acting drunk and confused allows you to fool your attackers and suddenly make an attack on them as they don’t expect it.
-shows Larbi’s journey and experience at the temple- he came to the temple to learn about the monks minimalist lifestyle and traditions shown through his observation, Kung Fu movement
Describe and interpret how the second monk emerges
-the first monk pulls the second monk out of the boxes using the gunshu, just like how he was pulled out by Larbi
-this could show the history of the monks and the passing down of techniques and ideas through the monks generations, the title of sutra being a thread
Describe the significant gesture do all 3 monks perform, and give the interpretation
-the monk makes a c shaped claw with his hand and he draws his hand up his chest leaning backwards and then tips his head back as his hand reaches his mouth. This is on an elongated note in the music showing music visualisation. The third monk also does this gesture but whilst bending over the edge of the box, and then in a deep side lunge on top of the boxes
-movement also shows the Drunken Fist technique, literally looking like they’re taking a drink as a way of fooling attackers
What happens as soon as the 3rd monk finishes the Drunken Fist movements?
-the music suddenly changes from the screechy violin to the piano and Larbi jabs the stick into the floor stood opposite the monk. The musicians are watching the movement of the monks so that they can respond at the right time
-this shows Larbi’s authority and status which he is asserting over the monk, showing the theme of east vs west
