Section 3- Maze Flashcards

1
Q

What is the opening of this section? Describe the music and the atmosphere it creates

A

-Larbi and Dong Dong are sat on the metal box DSR and using the mini wooden boxes are creating a small scale formation of the big boxes. The boxes that are not needed Dong Dong swipes them away throwing them off the box in a very childlike manner. At the same time the monks are helping to move the boxes from the pond formation into the maze formation. They get up out of their boxes in twos and threes and begin to help push the boxes into position. The extra boxes that aren’t needed are rolled and removed from upstage corners
-the music is a 2-4 March and you can hear the percussion and piano which creates a thicker texture to the music creating this busy feel, showing monks regimented lifestyle and order

Q

Where does Dong Dong move whilst inside the maze and what happens afterwards?

A

-he first pokes his head out of the USR hole in the maze, just looking around, then he disappears and reappears in the DSR hole, then then DSL hole, then the USR hole. He climbs out of the fourth hole and does a forwards roll into the middle right hole, then gets out and jumps on his bum moving into the middle left hole. Then suddenly all the monks run over and destroy the maze, leaving just one box centre stage with Dong Dong inside
-this sudden change in dynamic comes from nowhere and makes the audience feel sympathetic towards DD for being isolated in the box by himself. It creates the imagery of how the monks must feel lonely and isolated at the temple away from their families. Theme of building and destroying

Q

Describe and analyse the movements that Dong Dong does inside of the box centre stage

A

-he first waddles to the left side of the box holding his knees, then bumps his head on the side falling backwards holding his head. He stands back up and waddles back the other way, hits his head and falls again, rubbing it like he’s in pain. He then does a forwards roll in the box finishing lay on his back with his feet lifted pressed up against the roof, then crawls his feet backwards to undo his flip
-very childlike and animalistic movement (wim van dekeybus) shows the loneliness and isolation that the monks have chosen to undertake in this lifestyle, it’s a solo showing his confinement

Q

Describe the final moment of this section and explain how it links back to the starting points and subject matter

A

-Dong Dong gives out a shout/cry whilst slamming his hands and feet on the roof of the box in a panicked and distressed way. Another monk comes over and him and Larbi slowly close the box trapping Dong Dong inside, who is peaking out underneath the box to the audience.
-this shows the theme of freedom and containment
-starting points of interaction with the boxes, calmness and spirituality/ dedication to the Buddhist philosophy
