Section 18- Courtyard Flashcards
Describe and interpret the final formation of boxes
-the monks all quickly run and grab a box and drag it into the formation of 7 boxes stood vertically along stage right, upstage and stage left
-this creates the outdoor courtyard environment that the monks practice their Kung Fu and train in
What is different about the lighting in this section?
-the musicians behind the gauze are lit up and can now be seen by the audience
Describe some of the key movements the monks and Larbi perform
-all monks stood facing different directions, start with hands in prayer position and bow forwards, like a greeting and sign of respect. They all do forwards kicks and punches slapping the shins, lunges moving forwards alternating the punching hand, high jumps slapping the shin
-shows the motif development of stage face and place, as all doing the same movement but in different areas of the stage
Describe the choreographic alterations that Larbi has applied to the traditional Kung fu movement in this section
-he uses choreographic devices such as unison, repetition, motif development of stage face and place, highlights, accumulative canon, where the tempo of the music speeds up as more dancers join in with movement on stage, creating a climatic ending to the work
Describe some of the movements in the final Kung Fu sequence where all performers are on stage together
-they do massive jumps kicking the leg, hitch kicks, forwards punches on a lunge and rapid changes of direction
What has happened to the aural setting in this final section?
-it has increased in tempo and in depth creating more sound at a louder volume to match building of movement to the climax
-the piece of music used is called passacaglia, which has a repeated base line becoming like a resonant heart beat that the audience are left with at the end of the piece
Describe the ending of the dance and explain why it is so fitting
-the monks end the dance with them all of stage and they circle the arm over to end in a crouch, head down. It is a clear and definite ending position for the dance performed in unison to create an impact and reinforce idea that they’re a collective and are united together. They hold this position for a short while as the lighting slowly dims to a black out, but the musicians continue to play, forcing the audience to reflect on what they’ve just watched before clapping, and allows the orchestra to be appreciated in their own right with no distraction of the dancers on stage.
