Section 47 Flashcards
An hic, si sese isti vitae dedisset, consularem hominem admodum adulescens in iudicium vocavisset?
Or this man, if he had given himself to that way of life, would he, as quite a young man, have brought a consular man to trial?
hic si laborem fugeret, si obstrictus voluptatibus teneretur,
If he were avoiding work, if he was being held, having been bound by pleasures,
in hac acie cotidie versaretur, appeteret inimicitias, in iudicium vocaret, subiret periculum capitis,
would he be involving himself in this battle-line every day, would he be searching for enmities, would he be prosecuting, would he be submitting to danger to his life,
ipse inspectante populo Romano tot iam menses aut de salute aut de gloria dimicaret?
would he himself be fighting for so many months now either for personal safety or for glory with the Roman people looking on?
Nihilne igitur illa vicinitas redolet, nihil hominum fama, nihil Baiae denique ipsae loquuntur?
Therefore does that neighbourhood smell of nothing, does the rumour of men, finally does Baiae itself speak of nothing?
Illae vero non loquuntur solum verum etiam personant, huc unius mulieris libidinem esse prolapsam
Indeed [Baiae] not only speaks, but even rings out, that the lust of one woman has lapsed into such a state
ut ea non modo solitudinem ac tenebras atque haec flagitiorum integumenta non quaerat
that she not only does not seek solitude and darkness and these coverings of disgrace
sed in turpissimis rebus frequentissima celebritate et clarissima luce laetetur.
but she rejoices in the most foul affairs, the most densely packed crowd and the broadest daylight.
