Dicet aliquis: ‘Haec est igitur tua disciplina? sic tu instituis adulescentes?
Someone will say: ‘Is this therefore your training? Is this how you teach young men?
ob hanc causam tibi hunc puerum parens commendavit et tradidit,
Was it for this reason that his father entrusted him as a boy and handed him over to you,
ut in amore atque in voluptatibus adulescentiam suam collocaret, et ut hanc tu vitam atque haec studia defenderes?’
so that he might spend his youth on love and on pleasures, and so that you might defend this [kind of] life and these pursuits?’
Ego, si quis, iudices, hoc robore animi atque hac indole virtutis atque continentiae fuit
If there was anyone, judges, with such strength of mind and such character of virtue and self-control
ut respueret omnes voluptates omnemque vitae suae cursum in labore corporis atque in animi contentione conficeret,
that he spat out all pleasures and completed/ devoted every course of life in/to the work of his body and in the effort of his soul,
quem non quies, non remissio, non aequalium studia, non ludi, non convivia delectarent, qui nihil in vita expetendum putaret nisi quod esset cum laude et cum dignitate coniunctum,
who was not delighted by rest, relaxation, the pursuits of his peers, love-affairs, feasts, who thought that nothing in life should be desired except what was linked with glory and with dignity,
hunc mea sententia divinis quibusdam bonis bonis instructum atque ornatum puto.
in my view I think this man is equipped and furnished with certain divine good qualitites.
Ex hoc genere illos fuisse arbitror Camillos, Fabricios, Curios omnesque eos, qui haec ex minimis tanta fecerunt.
Of this sort I think were those men like the Camilli, Fabricii, Curii and all those who made [this world of ours/ Rome] so great from very small [beginnings].
