Indentured Servants
poor people who were given free passage to the colonies in exchange for work; provided most of the labor on tobacco plantations in Virginia; life was short+brutal
Bacon’s rebellion
an attack on Native American villages; showed that government could not ignore the demands of its people
Nathaniel Bacon
a young planter in western Virginia; He opposed the colonial government because it was dominated by easterners; was on the verge of taking over Jamestown but he ended up becoming ill and dying
Political characteristics of southern Colonies
political power = controlled by few wealthy, rich planters; only land-owning men could vote; House of Burgesses = 1st ex. of possible democracy
Economic characteristics of Southern colonies
carolinas + Georgia grew indigo + rice (cash crops); tobacco = main crop on plantations ins Virginia; Indentured servants provided labor; replaced by enslaved Africans (end of 1600’s)
social characteristics of southern colonies
sparse population; little access to education + religion; structure = wealthy planters on top, poor whites + black slaves at bottom
geography + climate characteristics of southern colonies
hot summers, mild winters; soil = perf. for farming; growing szn = longer than other regions; most of south = dominated by large plantations
middle passage
the sea journey of enslaved Africans from west Africa to the Americas
triangular trade
the exchange of raw materials going to Europe, manufactured goods to Africa and enslaved Africans to the Americas
