Articles of Confederation
Created during the Second Continental Congress; our nation’s first constitution. It created a weak central government.
States had the most power; Gave congress limited power like conducting foreign affairs, maintaining armed forces, borrowing money and issue currency; No chief executive; Each state had one vote regardless of; population; Congress could not pass laws unless 9 states voted for it; Changing the articles required the approval of all 13 states
Ordinance of 1785
The ordinance that split a township of 36 sections.
The townships were 6 miles long and 6 miles wide;
A section was 1 mile.
With this land they sold it for $1 each
Northwest Ordinance of 1787
Divided the land north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River into 3-5 smaller territories.
When a territory had 60,000 residents, they could seek statehood
It provided a bill of rights for the settlers and guaranteed freedom of religion and trial by jury
It also prohibited slavery in the territories ans was the first attempt to do so in the U.S
Republic
government in which citizens rule through elected representatives. This gave the people more of a choice over who they wanted to hold office so they didnt feel like they were under british rule.

Daniel Shays
He was a formal Revolutionary War Captain.
he led armed farmers in marches outside county courthouses in Springfield and other towns in western Massachusetts.
In 1787, his men attacked a Springfield building where the government stored guns.

Virginia Plan

It created a strong national government with 3 branches
The number of representatives would be proportional to the population of the state

legislature would have a single house
each state had one vote no matter the size
smaller states liked this plan
Three fifths compromise
was made because the states couldn’t decided whether or not to to count slaves towards the total population; The south wanted this because it would give them a higher population, but the north didn’t want this; decided to count every 5 slaves as 3 people towards the population.

great compromise
suggested by Roger Sherman. This would combine both the New Jersey Plan and the Virginia Plan. There was a 2 house legislature, the upper house was the senate where every state would have 2 members like the equal representation in the New Jersey Plan. The lower house was the House of Representative which would have the amount of seats proportional to the states population like the Virginia Plan.

supporters of the constitution; believed that they needed a strong federal government and that the federal govt and states should work together; aid that the rich or elite should be incharge of the government because the commoners change often and don’t know what is right; They stated that they did not need a bill of rights because the constitution already protects people’s right; Property owners and merchants were the people who supported them. Some others were rich, and upper class.
