William Penn
wealthy English Quaker; received land from his father; he called it Pennsylvania; designed Philadelphia himself; wrote Pennsylvania’s first constitution; believed that the land belonged to the Native Americans and that settlers should pay for it; advertised his colony throughout Europe; granted colonists the right to elect representatives to the legislature
Quakers
a Protestant group that had been persecuted in England, founded the colony of Pennsylvania; they were also pacifists or people who refuse to use force or fight in wars
Political characteristics of middle Colonies
gov. of Pennsylvania = set up as representative; all land-owning men could vote; women could not
Economic characteristics of middle Colonies
New York + Philadelphia became major urban trading centers; ppl. from all over worked there as blacksmiths, cobblers, wigmakers; slavery was legal, not abundant; most enslaved worked on docks/ships
Social characteristics of Middle Colonies
many diff. religions - Quakers, Catholics, Jews; all spoke diff. languages; Quakers believed everyone was same in Gods eyes; protested against slavery in 1688
Geography + climate characteristics of Middle Colonies
warm summers, cool winters; displayed long growing szn. + rich fertile soil; suitable farming; grew barley, rye,wheat; grown in abundance; known as the “breadbasket”
