Secondary Hyperparathyroidism Flashcards
what is Secondary Hyperparathyroidism
overproduction of PTH from an abnormal stimulus-> not from parathyroid gland
Secondary Hyperparathyroidism occurs when parathyroid gland is being chronically stimulated to release __
PTH
what are some things that cause PTH to be released in Secondary Hyperparathyroidism
renal failure (MCC) kidney transplantation vitamin d DEFICIENCY hyperphosphatemia hypocalcemia
decreased calcium levels will cause __ to be released
PTH
clinical manifestation of Secondary Hyperparathyroidism
renal failure is most common
dysrhythmias, osteomalacia, myopathy
Secondary Hyperparathyroidism labs
decreased to normal calcium levels
increased PTH
increased PO4 (renal) or decreased PO4 (vitamin D deficiency)
decreased vitamin D
What imaging would be done for Secondary Hyperparathyroidism
x-ray for areas of bone pain
treatment for Secondary Hyperparathyroidism
correct vitamin D deficiency
renal: dietary phosphate restriction, phosphate binders if dietary restriction doesn’t work
if the above aren’t successful then parathyroidectomy for severe Hyperparathyroidism
prognosis for Secondary Hyperparathyroidism
medical therapy is mostly succesful
if surgery is required to treat Secondary Hyperparathyroidism, what is the recurrence rate?
10%
