SEARCH AND RESCUE TECHNIQUES Flashcards
standard search
follows a right or left hand pattern while maintaining wall contact
3 common search techniques
standard
team
oriented
standard search advantages
crew stays together
all members area searching
two in two out is maintained
standard search disadvantages
safety is not foremost (all members searching, minimal situational awareness)
only one room searched at a time
no one assigned orientation to an egress point
team search
rope used as a guide when searching
rope is anchored to a solid object in safe area
team plays out rope, all members in contact with rope
team search advantages
crews remain together
all members can search as they are oriented on rope
two in two out is maintained
team search disadvantages
safety is not foremost (all members searching, no situational awareness)
team relies solely on rope to find the way out
rope attachment can slow search efforts and rapid egress
oriented search
oriented leader
search crew
oriented search advantages
crew safety in focus at all times
searchers focus is on finding victims
searches are conducted faster
more than one room searched simultaneously
oriented search disadvantages
not all members are searching
requires extensive training and discipline
significant responsibility place on oriented leader
two approaches to TIC use during search
TIC lead
TIC directed
- view all 6 sides
- stay oriented
TIC lead
stay oriented
leader uses TIC
crew follows
leader assigns areas to search
ideal application is during VIS
TIC directed
stay oriented
TIC leader shares view with search crew
gives FF visual clues and orients FF to room
TIC leader maintains possession
things to remember when using TIC
TIC can fail stay oriented while searching leader scans in front, behind and above TIC cannot replace FF use TIC to enhance skills not replace
VES
VEIS
Vent Enter Search (Isolate)
always notify command of VES and location
2 person operation (first enters, second monitors search)
lean tool into room to assist finding way out
do not re-open door when leaving room
can be done in marginal conditions, must be rapid & victim suspected
using rope during search
quick deployment easier mobility pulled back and forth by opposing searchers difficult to follow out with victim easily entangled if contact is lost it is hard to find
use of hoseline for search
easy to keep in place for orientation takes longer to deploy provides fire stream for protection easier to follow while extricating victim if contact is lost, easier to find
commercial highrise search
use hoseline and oriented search
oriented leader to maintain contact with crew at all times (voice, touch, visual)
malls and retail store search
present most challenging search conditions
consider defend in place (aggressive attack and ventilation)
use a hoseline and oriented search
