What is health, and wellness?

A

health is the complete social, mental, and physical well-being that is more then just the absence of disease and disability. Involves wellness which is having a positive outlook and is associated with quality of life.

What is agency?

A

autonomy of self, being able to make own decisions about your future. can decrease with age.

What are the determinants of health?

A

range of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors affecting overall health status of someone. ex.’s; income/ economic status, child development, gender, housing, food security, social exclusion, genetic factors, education lvl, employment/working conditions, physical enviro, social enviro, personal health practices, culture, race/racism.

What are the social determinants of health?

A

social and economic factors that affect health status such as education lvl, income, employment. can also be government policies and values as well as your own behaviours.

What is health equity?

A

when everyone in a pop has the same opportunities to reach their full health potential. can be undermined by social and economic factors that dont give everyone the same resources. such as; governance, environment, income, etc.

what is public health?

A

the health of the public and what we can do as a society to ensure it. so making sure there are less differences in health bc of factors like education and income. so things like resources, policies, services that help out everyone.

What is health promotion?

A

enabling ppl to have more control over their health and the determinants that affect it, so that they can improve their health. ie building public health policy, creating supportive enviros.

What is primary prevention (diseases)?

A

preventing the development of the disease before it occurs ie immunizations, health promotion such as PA, improved nutrition. so this stage is stopping the disease fro being contracted.

What is tertiary prevention (diseases)?

A

when already have the disease trying to delay progression and keep quality of life. so limiting complications. can be done by rehabilitation.

What is secondary prevention (diseases)?

A

screening, trying to catch the disease before symptoms start so in the early stages. can be done by yearly checkups and health awareness.

What affects aging successfully?

A

all of the health determinants discussed (ie. gender, social status, income, environment, child devel, health practices, etc.). also affected by things like epigenetics and oxidative stress/biological processes.

What is aging in place?

A

When OAs are able to stay and live in their homes as they age. can be good if own your space, know your space, have a community that will help you, its affordable. not so good if have dementia, if its too much on care givers, you have limited at home care, costly.
