Q

What are some benefits of PA for OA’s that can be promoted?

A

the benefits of PA are that they minimize the risk and reverse the effects of many physical , psychological, and social hazards that come with advancing age. these benefits apply to most OA’s regardless of health status or disease.

Q

What are some barriers to PA for OA’s?

A

the basic ones for all adults are lack of time, energy and motivation. for OA’s we also have, safety, excessive cost, lack of transportation, lack of skill/info, lack of social support, phys enviro, program types, diverse cultures (language, ethnicity, education)

Q

What are the PA recommendations based on health and fxnl status?

A

the actives; continue activity, do new activity, increase lvl. Those in transition, so whos health is declining bc of low lvls of activity, too much sedentary time, lost mm strength and balance, obesity can gain lots. their goal is to reverse loss of function and prevent disease. Frail older adults also a catagory.

Q

How can we get frail OA’s to be PA?

A

those who are frai lhave very low physical or cognitive fxn perhaps bc of chronic disease or old age itself. may need a therapeutic approach, and may be in residential care. goals are to minimize bio changes in aging, reverse disuse syndromes, control chronic diseases, maximize psych health, increase mobility and function, and assist with rehab from acute and chronic illnesses. Pa should be done effectively and safely to treat the condition. Also should be a manner of prevention. degree of supervision may vary.

Q

PA for OA’s in long term care facilities?

A

heterogenous in fxnl ability so they’re not all the same. 1, reduce sedentary behaviour, put in breaks, motivation and pleasure, ie walking to dining hall etc. 2. specific exercise training, dependent on adls, mod intensity, integrate balance/coordination and balance.

Q

How should PA be different for OA’s with osteoporosis?

A

first do a fracture risk assessment, then do activities that include weight- bearing activities (if careful), strength, balance, posture, and flexibility training. modifications for difference in risk ie spine fracture has high incidence of occurring again so theyd be very low impact (no jumping, heavy liftinf, twisting, running, etc.) swimming is a good low impact option.
