What is the world report on aging and health?
summarizes the best available evidence, and outlines a framework for action around a new concept of functional ability.
What is healthy aging?
the process of developing and maintaining functional ability that enables well-being in older age,
What is functional ability? and what are the two concepts it involves?
comprises the health related attributes that enable ppl to do and be what they value. involves intrinsic capacity; physical and mental capacities of the person. and environments; the extrinsic factors in the world that form the context of an individuals life. The goal is to maximize fxnl ability with age.
What influences health in older age?
Individual; behaviours, PA, diet, sleep, habits, substance use. age-related changes, loss of bone density and mm mass. genetics, driving factor in how long someone lives. disease, risk involved can be due to genetic factors. Environmental; housing. assistive technologies, glasses, dentures, walking aids. transport. social facilities.
What are the barriers to healthy aging?
outdated and ageist stereotypes, inadequate policies, inadequate or absent services, lack of accessibility, lack of consultation and involvment of OAs.
Why should we invest in healthy aging?
creates a future for OAs to live lives previous generations could’ve never imagined. if we invest in health systems, long-term care, lifelong learning, age-friendly enviros, social protection, in return we get; individual well being, workforce participation, consumption, entrepreneurship and investment, innovation, social and cultural contribution, social cohesion.
What is the importance of public-health action across the life-course? (graph)
we want to increase/keep up fxnl ability and intrinsic capacity. do so by preventing chronic conditions and slowing the decline. want to promote enhancing behaviours and ensure OAs can live dignified lives.
What is the global strategy and action plan?
trying to do the decade of healthy aging 2020-2030. action plans were developed 2016-2020. covid got in the way of timeline.
What are the priority areas for action in the GSAP?
Align health systems to the older pops they now serve, develop long-term care systems, improve measurement, monitoring and understanding, ensure everyone can grow old in an age-friendly enviro.
What does align health systems mean?
place older ppl at the centre of care. focus on optimizing what ppl can do not just managing diseases, develop the workforce.
What does developing long-term care systems mean?
establish the foundation of a functioning system, develop the long-term care workforce, ensure quality of long-term care.
What does create age-friendly enviros mean?
combatting ageism, enabling autonomy, support healthy aging in all policies
What does improve measurement, monitoring, and understanding mean?
agreeing on metrics, measures and analytical approaches. improving understanding of health status and needs of older pops. increase understanding of aging trajectories and how to improve them (longitudinal studies).
What is ageism? What does the global report on ageism do?
prejudice or discrim against someone for their age, often intertwined with ableism. gives info in ageism and outlines a framework of action to reduce ageism.
