SDF Revision Questions Flashcards
What is SDF?
liquid that is painted onto the teeth to slow down or stop tooth decay progressing
fluoride = 44,500ppm
What are the 3 components of SDF?
Silver - acts as antibacterial
Fluoride - remineralisation
Ammonium ions
What are indications for SDF?
Asymptomatic caviated lesions in primary teeth
Lesions that are or can be non cleansable
Root surface carious lesions
Non resotrative dentinal lesions
MIH cases to reduce senstivity
Where there is a need to buy time to avoid or delay treatment with sedation or GA
Patients with high caries risk with medical conditions that limit other treatment options
What are contraindications of SDF
Patietns with allergy to siliver fluoride or ammonia
Patients with ulceration, mucosistis, stomatitis
Not able to or unwilling to brush and unlikely to
Caries to pulp
Signs of infection
Potassium iodide in pregnant or breastfeeeding women
Patients with allergy to potassium or iodine
What is the follow up time for SDF placement?
2-4 weeks and if lesion is still active then reapply
What can result as a chemical reaction of SDF placement?
Promotion of tooth desensitisation by blockage of dentinal tubules
Arrest of carious lesions by blockage of deintinal tubules
Bacterial death
Remineralisation of deminarlised tooth tissue
Inhibiton of deintinal collagen degradation
Benefits of SDF?
Simple treatment
Stops decay progressing
No handpiece needed
Good evidence for caries arress
Risk of SDF?
Decay may continue to develop
Permantly disclours areas of tooth decay - black
Temp stains skin, lips, gums and cheeks for 1-3weeks (place vaseline on lips)
Discolouration of tooth coloured fillings
Staining to clothing
Metallic taste
Requires monitoring
