SCLERA Flashcards
1
Q
WHAT IS SCLERA DERIVED FROM?
A
MESENCHYME OUTSIDE OPTIC CUP
2
Q
WHERE DOES SCLERA FIRST FORM?
A
NEAR FUTURE INSERTION OF RECTI MUSCLES
3
Q
SCLERA
A
- tough, white outer layer of eyeball
- continuous with cornea
- anteriorly covered by bulbar conjunctiva
- inner surface in contact with choroid
- perforated by nerves + BV’s
4
Q
SCLERA FUNCTIONS
A
- protects against trauma + mechanical displacement
- preserves shape of eyeball
- provides rigid insertion for EOM
- divided into ant. + post. portions at equator
5
Q
LAYERS OF SCLERA
A
- episcleral tissue
- scleral proper
- lamina fusca
6
Q
EPISCLERAL TISSUE
A
- thin tissue overlying sclera
- dense vascular layer of connective tissue
7
Q
SCLERAL PROPER
A
- avascular
- interlaced bundles of collagen fibres
8
Q
LAMINA FUSCA
A
- innermost layer of sclera
- contains collagen fibres + melanocytes
- attached to choroid by collagen fibres
- brown due to pigmented cells
9
Q
ANTERIOR SCLERAL COAT
A
- tenons capsule partly covers ant. sclera
- thin fibrous membrane that envelopes eyeball from optic nerve to limbus
10
Q
SCLERAL SPUR
A
collagen containing structure, protrusion of sclera into ant. chamber
11
Q
LAMINA CRIBROSA
A
- mesh like structure behind optic disc in sclera
- allows optic nerve fibres to pass through + acts as a pressure barrier
