CILIARY BODY Flashcards
CILIARY BODY FUNCTIONS
- accommodation
- production of aqueous
- production of vitreous constituents
WHERE IS ANTERIOR BORDER MARKED BY?
SCLERAL SPUR
WHERE DOES POSTERIOR BOUNDARY OCCUR?
ORA SERRATA
PARS PLICATA
anterior part has many ridges (ciliary processes)
PARS PLANA
posterior part is smooth
WHERE DO SUSPENSORY (ZONULAR) FIBRES OF LENS RUN FROM?
run from the pars plana to pass through the ciliary process of para plicata + attach to lens capsule
STRUCTURE OF CILIARY BODY
- supraciliaris
- stroma
- epithelium
SUPRACILIARIS
- lines sclera from scleral spur to choroid
- transition zone from ciliary stroma to the sclera
- consists of collagen strands interlaced with fibroblasts + melanocytes
STROMA
- bulk of stroma filled by ciliary muscle
- muscle anchored to scleral spur anteriorly + it’s fibres pass posteriorly into the stroma of the choroid
LONGITUDINAL FIBRES
extend from scleral spur to choroid
RADIAL FIBRES
aka oblique fibres
CIRCULAR FIBRES
have a sphincter like orientation close to the iris root
EPITHELIUM OF CILIARY BODY
- double layer of cells extending from iris root to retina
- deep layer has pigment epithelial cells linked to each other
- unpigmented cells in superficial layer by desmosomes
UNPIGMENTED CELLS IN PARS PLICATA CONTAIN WHAT?
- many mitochondria + rough ENDOPLASMIC reticulum for protein synthesis
- cells along ridges of ciliary processes contain glycogen as an energy source
CILIARY BODY BLOOD SUPPLY
MAC - major arterial circular near attachment to iris root
