CHOROID Flashcards
1
Q
CHOROID
A
- lines sclera from the ora serrata to the edge of optic disc
- heavily pigmented with melanin containing cells giving it a brown colour for light absorption
2
Q
VASCULAR STRUCTURE OF CHOROID
A
provides route for metabolites to the anterior eye
nutrition to + removing waste from retinal receptors
3
Q
CHOROIDAL LAYERS
A
- suprachoroid
- stroma
- choriocapillaris
- basal lamina (bruch’s membrane)
4
Q
SUPRACHOROID LAYER
A
- transition zone between choroid + sclera
- collagen fibres continuous with those of sclera + melanocytes + fibroblasts
- carries nerves + BV’s to/ from anterior uvea
5
Q
CHOROIDAL STROMA
A
- pigment layer consisting of BV’s
- between vessels are melanocytes + fibroblasts with some collagen + ground substance
- macrophages + lymphocytes present
6
Q
CHORIOCAPILLARIS
A
- capillaries lie in a single plane against internal limiting lamina of choroid, not distributed throughout thickness of tissue
- capillaries unusually wide
- free of pigment
7
Q
CHOROIDAL BASAL LAMINA (BRUCH’S MEMBRANE)
A
layered with outer elastic + inner cuticular lamina
8
Q
CUTICULAR LAMINA
A
consists of basement membrane of RPE + a layer of collagen
9
Q
DRUSEN
A
ageing of Bruch’s membrane thickens to form these mounds which contain granular material secreted by RPE
