Scientific Method Flashcards
Deductive Reasoning
General explanations are applied to specific instances. “hypothesis-driven science”
Inductive Reasoning
Specific observations are used to reach a general explanation. “discovery science”
Scientific Method
Observations - Questions - Hypothesis - Prediction - Test: Experiment
Scientific Hypothesis
A proposed explanation for one or more observations.
A hypothesis must be “testable.” Explain.
Testable means able to be evaluated via experiments that others can repeat.
A hypothesis must be falsifiable. Explain.
One must be able to prove the hypothesis false (this does not mean the hypothesis is false; rather, it means that if it is false, then this can be shown through observation or experiments).
Research designs need what group types?
Control and treatment
Null Hypothesis
The assumption that the difference between the control and treatment groups in an experiment is initially zero.
