Chemistry of Life Flashcards
Four States of Matter
Solid - Liquid - Gas - Plasma
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass.
Element
A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances.
Compounds
Two or more elements in a fixed ratio.
Atomic Number
Tells one the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Atom
The smallest unit of matter that retains the properties of an element. Consists of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Ionic Bonding
An attraction between two ions with opposite electrical charges. An electron transfer happens, and a compound is formed.
Ion
An atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more electrons, thus acquiring an electrical charge.
Covalent Bonding
An attraction between atoms that share one or more pairs of outer-shell electrons. Electron sharing occurs, and this creates molecules.
Hydrogen Bonds
A type of weak chemical bond formed when the partially positive hydrogen atom participating in a polar covalent bond in one molecule is attracted to the partially negative atom participating in a polar covalent bond in another molecule.
Chemical Reaction
A process leading to chemical changes in matter involving the making and/or breaking of chemical bonds.
Reactants
What goes into a chemical reaction.
Products
What comes out, the results, of a chemical reaction.
