what is the respiratory system?
providing oxygen to the cells of the body and for removing carbon dioxide
what is the function of the nose/mouth?
passage way for air to enter and exit
what is the function of the pharynx (throat)?
helps you to breathe and digest food
what is the function of the larynx (voice box)?
as air moves through the vocal chords, they vibrate and produce the sound of your voice
what is the function of the trachea?
goblet cells. produces mucus and has cilia
what is the function of the bronchi?
delivers air to the lungs
what is the function of the bronchioles?
moving/pushing air to the end
what is the function of the alveoli/capillaries?
site of gas exchange. the alveoli are covered in tiny blood vessels known as capillaries so oxygen can move into the bloodstream and be carried around the body
what is inhalation?
volume of the lungs increases, the rib cage expands and the diaphragm flattens
what is exhalation?
volume of the lungs decreases, muscles relax and the diaphragm becomes dome-shaped decreasing the volume of the lungs to push air out
