Science 5 Light Flashcards
Define luminous
An object that emits light I.e fire, light bulb
Define emit
Produces
Define non-luminous
An object that does not emit light, it could be something dull/dark
- a table does not emit light it reflects it
How do we see objects
- Light is emitted (given off) by certain objects.
- the light then reflects off of an object
- before being absorbed by our eyes
What does it mean to transmit light
- an object which allows light to pass through it is said to transmit light
- depending on how transparent or opaque the object is will determine how clear you can see the object through
Define transparent
Is absolutely see through
Define translucent
You can partially see through it
Define opaque
You cannot see through this. It blocks the light out
Can light travel through a vacuum
Yes unlike sound waves
What type of wave is sunlight
A transverse wave
It travels through rays in straight lines
Define reflection
When light waves bounce off a surface
What is the law of reflection
Angle of incidence = angle of reflection
How does reflection work
- luminous object emits light and this produces the incident ray
- this hits a surface of some sort/ reflective surface
- this gives out the reflected ray
- Eyes absorb this
Both angles, incidence and reflected, are the same
Define refraction
- the change of direction of light when an object enters a different medium
Does the light slow down or quicken when it enters a dense medium
It slows down
