Define settlement
A place where people chose to live,work and stay
types of settlements
Compact/ Nucleated- building are clustered, urban area -Terraced houses
Dispersed- made up of several houses, scattered in an area
Isolated- single farmhouse or very remote areas
Rural and urban areas differences
Population- very high in urban cities and low in rural areas
Relief- very low heights above sea level in urban cities but higher up in rural areas
Cultural mix- urban areas are more diverse, rural areas are not mostly occupied by one group
Features of a typical urban landscape
Overcrowded roads Many school/shop/cars Diverse, high population Many houses and roads Lack of open space, greenery Gentle relief to build buildings easily
Features of a typical rural area
Small communities Lots of open space Few schools, necessary shops, High relief, many hills hard to build houses Not many tall building Villages Low, dispersed population
List all the types of landuses
Recreational- fun, non-essential- parks Transport- roads, railways, airports Agriculture- farming, farmland. Residential- houses Commercial- business and factories
Define rural areas
- sparsely populated
- few buildings
- fewer forms of transport
- higher relief
- fewer non-essential shops, entertainment
Define urban areas
- densely populated
- town/cities
- lots of shops/ cars/ schools
- many forms of transport
Cities in the uk distributed
- uneven
- majority of cities are located in England and the midland
- a few cities on the coast lines
- in the south-east of England is where the major settlements/urban areas are located
Location factors affect city location
Water source- to survive and wash clothes necessities
Gentle relief- easy to build houses and buildings
Coastline- warships, trading goods with surrounding countries, transport
Good transport links- easy to commute
Enough agriculture in order to grow crops
Build on high ground gave people an opportunity to defend themselves against incoming enemies
