Science 14 Flashcards
a. Define Veins
Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart
b. Define Arteries
Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
c. Define Capillary
Tiny, thin-walled blood vessels that allow the exchange of gases and nutrients between the blood and cells and are located between arteries and veins
- What purpose do the lungs serve?
The lungs oxygenate the blood and allow the blood to get rid of carbon dioxide
- What purpose does the heart server?
the heart pumps the blood throughout the circulatory system.
- How many chambers does the heart have? Name them
The human hear has four chambers, the right atrium, the left atrium, right ventricle, and the left ventrical
- What is special about a four chambered heart as compared to a three chambered heart or a two chamber heart?
A four-chambered heart is much more efficient than other kinds of hearts
- In what kind of blood vessels does the blood transfer oxygen the cells and pick up wastes?
Capillaries
- When deoxygenated blood s returning to the heart, into what chamber does it enter the heart?
Right atrium
- After entering the heart, the deoxygenated blood is then transferred to a second chamber. What chamber is that?
Right ventricle
- When deoxygenated blood leaves the heart, where does it go?
lungs
- When oxygenated blood comes into the heart, what chamber does it fill?
Left atrium.
- Once the oxygenated blood is back in the heart, it is then transferred to another chamber. What chamber is that?
Left ventricle
- When oxygenated blood leaves the heart, through what artery does it travel first?
Aorta
- Most veins carry what kind of blood (oxygenated or deoxygenated)? are there any exceptions?
Deoxygenated blood, there are exceptions
