General Science Flashcards
Define Prokaryotic cell
A cell that has no distinct, membrane-bounded organelles
Define Eukaryotic cell
A cell with distinct, membrane-bounded organelles
Define Pathogen
An organism that causes disease
Define Decomposers
Organisms that break down the dead remains of other organisms
Define Vegetative reproduction
The process by which one part of the plant can form new roots and develop into a complete plant
what the 5 kingdoms we used in our classification system:
Monera, Plantae, Fungi, Animalia, Protista
If an organism is made up of several Eukaryotic cells and eats only dead organism to which organism does it belong to?
Fungi
If an organism is made up of several Eukaryotic cells, it makes its own food and is made up of specialized structures to do specialized task, what cell do I belong to:
Plantae
If an organism is made up of Prokaryotic cell and eats only dead organisms to which kingdom does it belong to:
Monera
If an organism is made up of several Eukaryotic cells and makes its own food, to which kingdom does it belong to:
Protista
If an organism is made up of one Eukaryotic cell and eats other living organisms, to which kingdom does it belong to:
Protista
If an organism is made up of several Eukaryotic cells and eats only living plants to which kingdom does it belong to:
animaila
why can a dehydrated food be stored for a long time without worry of it being contaminated by bacteria?
Bacteria must have water to survive, dehydrated food has almost all the water removed so it has almost no place to grow and reproduce.
why did people salt meat before refrigeration was available?
Because the presents of salt reduces the growth and reproduction of bacteria.
when you store food for a long time why does converting it reduce the amount of bacterial contamination
bacteria can be introduced onto food or liquid by dust particles in the air, covering the food keeps the dust particles off preventing the addition of new bacteria onto the food.
a member of the kingdom Protista can move on its own, is it part of the protozoa or the algae
Protozoa
are there any pathogenic organisms in the kingdom protisa
yes
why are the decomposers essential to creation
Decomposer’s recycle the dead matter in creation, without them there would be no way that the materials in dead organisms could be used again by living organisms
what is the main part of a mushroom: the cam the stalk the gills or the mycelium?
mycelium.
icebergs are dangerous to ships because the visible part of an iceberg is actually very small, most of an iceberg is underwater where it cannot be seen how is a mushroom like an iceberg
like an iceberg, the visible part of a mushroom is actually a small part of the organism, most of the org lies unseen underground
are all members of kingdom fungi made of many cells? If not, give an example of a single celled member of kingdom fungi
no, yeast is an example.
a cell has a cell wall and a central vacuole is it prokaryotic cell, a plant cell, or an animal cell
plant cells
what is turgor pressure
pressure inside of a plant cell that is caused by the central vacuole pushing the cell contents against the cell wall, it allows the plants to stand upright
what kingdom are humans apart of?
Animalia! but we are VIP’s in this kingdom!
