science😡 Flashcards
what is a wave?
A travelling disturbance
what is sir Issac newtons definition of science
looking at the ordinary and seeing the extraordinary
what is energy
the ability to do work: to cause a change
what is the high point of a wave called?
crest
what is the lowest point of a wave called?
trough
what is a wave length?
crest to crest or trough to trough
what is amplitude?
rest to crest or trough to rest
what is sound?
The energy from a vibrating object that travels through a medium.
what is a sound wave
a chain of vibrating molecules
what do waves not carry?
matter
what do waves carry?
energy
what is a medium
anything with atoms
what is a transverse wave
particles vibrating at right angles in the direction the wave is traveling in.
why does sound travel faster through a solid
because the atoms are closely packed together in a solid
what is sound the movement of
a vibrating object
what 2 variables affect sound
medium and temperature
what do sound waves require
medium
what dont electromagnetic waves require
a medium (but they CAN travel through a medium)
what are 4 catergories of waves
sound, water, heat and light
what are examples of mechanical energy
throwing a baseball, turning a key, turning a turbine, turning a windmill
whats the formula for mechanical energy
P.E + K.E
what will playing a violin do to the air around it
make the air particles vibrate making them comprise and refract
whats a rarefaction
the parts of a wave that are more spread apart
whats a compresion
the part of a wave that are closely packed
what are some examples of chemical energy
biomass, batteries, photosynthesis, fossil fuel, coal,
how fast will sound travel in room temperature
768 mph
why does sound travel faster through a solid?
because their are more molecules in a solid
what doe angle of incidents equal
angle of reflection
angle of incidence (into mirror) =
Example - 90 degrees
angle reflected back
whats diffraction?
sound travelling around or through a barrier
whats refraction?
bending of sound and light due to the change in soundings.
what does boredom have to do with science?
boredom creates curiosity which creates questions
1 wave per second is called
hertz
At room temperature, about how fast does sound travel?
768 mph
What is the difference between reflection and refraction?
In refraction the light gets bent when it reaches a different medium, while in a reflection it bounces off when it reaches another medium.
What were the energy conversions in the water balloon slingshot?
There is mechanical energy in the water balloon slingshot. When the balloon was in the pouch it was potential energy, but when it was released and soaring in the air it was converted into kinetic energy.
What are the key traits of a sound wave?
Sound waves travel at a right angle up and down in the direction the wave is traveling.
What is the law of reflection?
The angle of incidence (in) = the angle of reflection (out)
energy conversions with water balloons?
hee hee
whats reflection
bouncing off
