A mental disorder characterized by the presence of one or more persistent, non-bizarre delusions.
Delusional Disorder
A short-term illness where a person suddenly experiences psychotic symptoms like delusions or hallucinations.
Brief Psychotic Disorder
A condition with symptoms similar to schizophrenia, but lasting less than 6 months.
Schizophreniform Disorder
A long-term mental illness where a person has psychotic symptoms and serious problems with thinking and functioning.
Schizophrenia
A mental health condition where psychotic symptoms occur along with mood episodes (depression or mania).
Schizoaffective Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Persistent delusions (e.g., persecutory, erotomanic, jealous, grandiose, somatic)
- No marked hallucinations, disorganized speech, or behavior
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
- 1 month or longer
- Onset often in middle to late adulthood
Delusional Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- One or more:
* Delusions
* Hallucinations
* Disorganized speech
* Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
- Duration: 1 day to < 1 month, with full return to premorbid level
- Sudden onset, often linked to trauma or stress
Brief Psychotic Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Two or more:
* Delusions
* Hallucinations
* Disorganized speech
* Disorganized/catatonic behavior
* Negative symptoms
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
- At least 1 month but < 6 months
- If not yet recovered, may be labeled “provisional”
Schizophreniform Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
* Two or more: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized/catatonic behavior, negative symptoms
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
- At least 6 months (incl. prodromal/residual phases)
- Onset usually in late teens to early 30s
Schizophrenia
SYMPTOMS:
Schizophrenia symptoms during mood episode
* Mood symptoms (manic or depressive) present for majority
* Delusions/hallucinations ≥ 2 weeks without mood episode
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
Mood symptoms present for majority of illness
- Chronic but more variable than schizophrenia
