Sexual arousal from observing an unsuspecting person naked, disrobing, or engaging in sexual activity.
Voyeuristic Disorder
Sexual arousal from exposing one’s genitals to an unsuspecting person.
Exhibitionistic Disorder
Sexual arousal from touching or rubbing against a nonconsenting person.
Frotteuristic Disorder
Sexual arousal from being humiliated, beaten, bound, or made to suffer.
Sexual Masochism Disorder
Sexual arousal from physical or psychological suffering of another person.
Sexual Sadism Disorder
Sexual arousal involving prepubescent children (usually ≤13 years old).
Pedophilic Disorder
Sexual arousal from use of nonliving objects or focus on nongenital body part(s).
Fetishistic Disorder
Sexual arousal from cross-dressing.
Transvestic Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Recurrent and intense sexual arousal from watching others in intimate situations (naked, undressing, or engaging in sexual acts).
- May involve fantasies, urges, or actual behavior (e.g., secretly watching or spying on others).
- The individual acts on these urges with a nonconsenting person or experiences distress or impairment in personal or social functioning due to the urges.
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 6 months; Person must be ≥18 years old.
Voyeuristic Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Recurrent sexual arousal from exposing genitals to others, often in public or semi-public spaces.
- The individual may act on these urges by exposing their genitals to unsuspecting individuals (e.g., public indecency).
- May involve fantasies, urges, or behaviors that lead to distress, anxiety, or impairment in social or occupational areas.
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 6 months. Can be directed toward children, adults, or both.
Exhibitionistic Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Recurrent sexual arousal from rubbing against others or touching them in inappropriate situations (e.g., crowded public places).
- Fantasies, urges, or behaviors may occur, with the individual seeking physical contact without consent.
- The behavior causes significant distress or impairment in the individual’s life, or they may act on the urges.
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 6 months. Common in crowded places.
Frotteuristic Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Recurrent fantasies, urges, or behaviors related to sexual arousal from suffering, which could involve being tied up, beaten, or humiliated during sex.
- This may include sadistic acts, but the focus is on the individual’s own suffering or being controlled.
- Distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. The behavior might also involve asphyxiophilia (arousal through breath control).
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 6 months. May include asphyxiophilia (breath control).
Sexual Masochism Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Recurrent fantasies, urges, or behaviors involving inflicting pain or humiliation on another person.
- The person may derive sexual pleasure from causing distress or harm to others, typically in a sexual context.
- Distress or impairment in social or occupational functioning may occur, or the person may act on these urges with a nonconsenting individual.
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 6 months. Onset often in adolescence.
Sexual Sadism Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Recurrent sexual fantasies, urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with prepubescent children.
- The individual may act on these urges with children or experience significant distress or interpersonal difficulties as a result.
- Distinguishes between sexual attraction to children and minor interactions with children in late adolescence.
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 6 months. Offender must be ≥16 years and ≥5 years older than the child.
Pedophilic Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Sexual arousal focused on nonliving objects (e.g., shoes, lingerie) or specific body parts (e.g., feet, hands).
- Recurrent fantasies, urges, or behaviors related to the fetish objects.
- The individual’s sexual interests may cause distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other areas of functioning.
- The fetish objects are not limited to items for cross-dressing or genital stimulation devices.
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 6 months. Excludes cross-dressing and genital stimulation devices.
Fetishistic Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Recurrent sexual arousal from cross-dressing (wearing clothing typically associated with the opposite sex).
- Fantasies, urges, or behaviors may include dressing in clothing to achieve sexual excitement.
- The arousal may be linked to fetishism (aroused by fabrics, materials) or autogynephilia (aroused by imagining oneself as female).
- Distress or impairment in functioning may occur.
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 6 months. May include fetishism or autogynephilia.
Transvestic Disorder
Incongruence between experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender in children.
Gender Dysphoria in Children
Marked incongruence between experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender in older individuals.
Gender Dysphoria in Adolescents and Adults
SYMPTOMS:
At least 6 symptoms (one must be a strong desire/insistence to be the other gender):
✓ Cross-gender clothing/play preferences
✓ Cross-gender role play
✓ Prefers toys/activities of other gender
✓ Dislikes sexual anatomy
✓ Desires other gender’s characteristics
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
Duration: ≥6 months
Onset: Typically early childhood
Gender Dysphoria in Children
SYMPTOMS:
At least 2 symptoms:
✓ Incongruence with sex characteristics
✓ Desire to rid self of own sex characteristics
✓ Desire for characteristics of other gender
✓ Desire to be or be treated as the other gender
✓ Conviction of being the other gender
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
Duration: ≥6 months
Onset: Can emerge during adolescence or adulthood, may persist from childhood
