DEPRESSIVE TOS Flashcards
Severe temper outbursts with a persistent irritable or angry mood.
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD)
Persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest, and other depressive symptoms.
Major Depressive Disorder
Chronic depression with milder symptoms than MDD
Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)
Severe mood swings, irritability, and other depressive symptoms before menstruation
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
Severe recurrent temper outbursts (verbal or behavioral) out of proportion to situation, inconsistent with developmental level. Mood between outbursts is persistently irritable/angry.
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 1 yr, onset before age 10
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD)
SYMPTOMS:
≥5 symptoms during the same 2-week period, including either
(1) depressed mood or
(2) loss of interest/pleasure.
Others: appetite/weight change, insomnia/hypersomnia, fatigue, worthlessness/guilt, poor concentration, psychomotor agitation/retardation, suicidal ideation.
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 2 weeks
Major Depressive Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
Depressed mood for most of the day, more days than not, for ≥2 years (≥1 year in youth), plus ≥2 of: appetite changes, sleep disturbance, fatigue, low self-esteem, poor concentration, hopelessness.
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least 2 yrs (1 yr in children/adolescents)
Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)
SYMPTOMS:
≥5 symptoms present in the week before menses, improve after onset, minimal post-menses. At least 1 of: mood swings, irritability, depressed mood, anxiety.
Plus additional: decreased interest, fatigue, appetite changes, sleep issues, overwhelmed feeling, physical symptoms (e.g., bloating, breast tenderness).
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
Symptoms present in the majority of menstrual cycles over the past year
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all activities (a hallmark of Major Depressive Disorder).
Anhedonia
Easily annoyed or provoked to anger; common in children/adolescents with depression (esp. in DMDD).
Irritability
Rapid and intense mood swings or emotional shifts. A key symptom in PMDD.
Mood Lability (Affective Lability)
Episodes of extreme verbal or behavioral anger out of proportion to the situation (DMDD).
Temper Outbursts
Physical restlessness or slowness, observed by others—not just subjective feelings.
Psychomotor Agitation/Retardation
Sleeping too much (hypersomnia) or too little (insomnia), often seen in depressive disorders.
Hypersomnia/Insomnia
Negative self-image and feelings of worthlessness, commonly seen in dysthymia/PDD.
Low Self-Esteem
A belief that things will never get better; strong predictor of suicidal thoughts.
Hopelessness
Symptoms that are present but not severe enough to meet full diagnostic criteria.
Subthreshold Symptoms
A mood disorder with fluctuating low-grade depressive and hypomanic symptoms for ≥2 years—not meeting full criteria for depression or hypomania (excluded from PDD).
Cyclothymic Disorder
A descriptive tag added to a diagnosis to give more detail (e.g., “with anxious distress,” “early onset”).
Specifier
A temporary diagnosis given when criteria seem to be met but full confirmation (e.g., 2 cycles for PMDD) is pending.
Provisional Diagnosis
Physical symptoms of depression (e.g., fatigue, changes in appetite/sleep, pain) not caused by medical conditions.
Somatic Symptoms
The age or phase in life when symptoms first appear (e.g., early-onset PDD = before age 21).
