Persistent eating of non-nutritive, non-food substances
Pica
Repeated regurgitation of food, which may be re-chewed, re-swallowed, or spit-out, not due to a medical condition
Rumination Disorder
Persistent avoidance of certain foods or limited intake that leads to significant nutritional deficiencies and functional impairment.
Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
Restriction of food intake leading to significantly low body weight, intense fear of gaining weight, and distorted body image.
Anorexia Nervosa
Recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by inappropriate compensatory behaviors (e.g. vomiting, excessive exercise)
Bulimia Nervosa
Recurrent episodes of binge-eating without compensatory, often associated with stress.
Binge-eating Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Craving and eating non-food items (e.g., dirt, paper, hair)
- Inappropriate to developmental level
- Not part of cultural practice

Persistent, typically lasting at least 1 month
Pica
SYMPTOMS:
- Regurgitated food is re-chewed, re-swallowed, or spit out
- Not due to GI or other medical issue
- Not exclusive to other eating disorders

Rumination Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Lack of interest in food or sensory avoidance
- Fear of choking or vomiting
- Weight loss, nutrient deficiency, supplement dependence
- Psychosocial impairment

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
SYMPTOMS:
- Intense fear of gaining weight
- Distorted body image
- Restriction, excessive exercise, or purging
- Subtypes: Restricting / Binge-Purge

Persistent, typically for at least 3 months
Anorexia Nervosa
SYMPTOMS:
- Binge eating with lack of control
- Purging, fasting, or excessive exercise
- Self-image tied to body weight/shape
COURSE/DURATION/ONSET:
At least once a week for 3 months
Bulimia Nervosa
SYMPTOMS:
- Eating large amounts of food with loss of control
- Associated with distress, guilt, rapid eating, eating when not hungry
- No purging

At least once a week for 3 months
Binge-eating Disorder
Eating, in a discrete period (e.g., 2 hours), an amount of food that is definitely larger than most would eat, with a sense of loss of control.
Binge Eating
Actions taken to prevent weight gain (e.g., vomiting, laxative use, fasting, excessive exercise). Seen in bulimia nervosa.
Compensatory Behaviors
Behaviors aimed at eliminating food from the body (e.g., self-induced vomiting, misuse of diuretics/laxatives).
Purging
Intentional limiting of food intake, typical in anorexia nervosa (restricting type).
Restricting
Repeated regurgitation and re-chewing of food without associated medical cause.
Rumination
Lack of interest in eating, sensory aversion to food, or concern about consequences like choking, without body image issues.
ARFID
Absence of menstruation; formerly a criterion for anorexia nervosa (no longer required in DSM-5).
