Most severe mental health disorder
Schizophrenia- progressive brain disorder (treated but not cured), psychosis common
Affects brain regulation
Impulse control, judgement, affect, social skills
Delusions
Paranoia (Persecutory), reverential, somatic, religious, erotomania, grandiose
Hallucinations
Auditory (most common)
Visual
Less common- olfactory, tactile, and gustatory
Disorganized thinking
Answers begin to veer off track, unrelated comments or answers, word salad
Disorganized behaviors and catatonia
Unpredictable and socially inappropriate behavior- masturbation, angry outbursts
Loss of responsiveness to environmental cues- rigid postures,
Negative symptoms
Diminished emotional expression, avolition, speech, anhedonia, decreased socialization/ relationships
Cognitive symptoms
Abstract reasoning and planning skills, language, attention, decrease ability to process visual stimuli,
Affective symptoms
Flat affect, dysphoria
Course and prognosis
Gradual or acute, vary (some independent living/work, some need 24 hour supervision and care), continued relapses, shorten life span (12-25 years) higher risk of death from MVA
Schizophreniform
Schizophrenia, more than 1 month but less than 6, OT deficits may not be present
Schizoaffective
Schizophrenia, major depressive, manic or mixed episodes occur
Delusional disorder
Delusions last at least 1 month, hallucinations,
Brief psychotic disorder
Sudden onset of psychotic symptoms and highly disorganized behavior, return to premorbid functioning
Psychotic disorder due to another medical condition
Result from other medical conditions, such as Huntington’s, renal, lupus, nerve injuries
