Involves some degree of elevated mood and at lease 1 major depressive episode, can be substance induced
Unipolar depression

Min 2 week period of depressed or irritable mood
BPD 1
Manic behaviors (euphoria, grandiosity, decreased sleep, impulsivity) Delusions and hallucinations
BPD II
History of MDD and at least one hypomaic episode (less intense mood/energy elevation)
Cyclothymia
Chronic, less severe mood disturbance, hypomanic and depressive symptoms
Flight of ideas
Rapidly changing, disconnected thoughts
Psychomotor agitation
Increased physical movements that are purposeless and reflective of an agitated or anxious state
Psychosis
The presence of delusions or hallucinations without insights
Anhedonia
Lack of interest in previously pleasurable activities
Avolition
Lack of drive or ambition to complete goal-directed tasks or activities
Major depressive disorder signs and symptoms
Depressed mood Altered sleep Feelings of worthlessness or guilt Thoughts of death or suicide Childhood symptoms (clingy, needy, irritability, behavior problems in school)
Bipolar disorder signs and symptoms
Grandiosity (inflated sense of self-esteem)
Minimal need for sleep
Flight of ideas
Dangerous behavior
Excessive goal-directed activity, distractibility, talkative
Signs and symptoms co-occurring in MDD/ BPD
Anxiety Diabetes Obesity Cardiopulmonary disease Abuse alcohol/ drugs
Prodromal period of BD
1-7 years pre onset noted by fluctuations in energy increase and dyes regulated mood, recovery from first episode is uncommon, first 2 years (relapse and suicidal behavior is higher)
Affect on OT
Sleeping, healthy diet, grooming, healthy leisure, home maintenance, school performance, employment, social interactions, increased isolation, management of daily needs, family roles, increase sexual activity (with risky behavior)
