onset

positive symptoms (active symptoms)
- delusions and hallucinations
- disorganized speech and behavior
negative symptoms (loss/absence of something)
- flat affect
- alogia (poverty of speech)
- avolition (poor initiation or inability to sustain activities)
- anhedonia or hypohedonia
cognitive symptoms
- disorganized speech, thought, attention
- difficulty with emotional regulation and social cognition
DSM-5 criteria
2+ for 1 month:
- delusions
- hallucinations
- disorganized speech
(^ has to be at least one of these)
- grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
- negative symptoms (flat affect, alogia, avolition)
some signs of the disorder must be present for 6+ months
social and occupational dysfunction
schizophreniform disorder
signs of disturbance are present for more than a month but less than 6 months
brief psychotic disorder
psychotic symptoms lasting less than a month
diagnostic tests
- no physical diagnostic tests
- physician will rule out other conditions
- tools to assist with rating presence/severity of symptoms
