Any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits (such as anorexia nervosa)”
•“Feeding and eating disorders are characterized by a persistent disturbance of eating or eating-related behavior that results in the altered consumption or absorption of food and that significantly impairs physical health or psychosocial functioning”
primary types of ED

anorexia nervosa
- restriction of energy intake
- significantly low weight
- intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat
- disturbance in the way one’s body weight/shape is experienced
bulimia nervosa
recurrent episodes of binge eating (eating in a 2 hr period a large amount of food with lack of control)
recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviors
at least once a week for 3 mo
ARFID
An eating or feeding disturbance (e.g., apparent lack of interest in eating or food; avoidance based on the sensory characteristics of food; concern about aversive consequences of eating) associated with one (or more) of the following:
•Significant weight loss (or failure to achieve expected weight gain or faltering growth in children).
•Significant nutritional deficiency.
•Dependence on enteral feeding or oral nutritional supplements.
•Marked interference with psychosocial functioning
OSFED
Symptoms characteristic of a feeding and eating disorder that cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning predominate but do not meet the full criteria for any of the disorders in the feeding and eating disorders diagnostic class. •Examples:
•Atypical anorexia nervosa
•Bulimia nervosa (of low frequency and/or limited duration)
•Binge-eating disorder (of low frequency and/or limited duration)
•Purging disorder
•Night eating syndrome
Binge eating disorder
Recurrent episodes of binge eating associated with three (or more) of the following:
•Eating much more rapidly than normal.
•Eating until feeling uncomfortably full.
•Eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry.
•Eating alone because of feeling embarrassed by how much one is eating.
•Feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or very guilty afterward
statistics
- highest mortality rate of all psychiatric illnesses
- males 25% and are higher risk for dying
- beginning earlier in the lifespan for both genders
- at risk for depression, low self esteem, body dissatisfaction, anxiety
- heritable

Predisposing: genetics, gender, age, familial factors
Precipitating: events or circumstances which increase the likelihood of onset or exacerbation of illness
Perpetuating: continued events or circumstances maintain the illness
Protective: individual strengths and assets that can help in managing the severity of symptoms and promote healthy adjustme
