Scapular and Pectoral Region Flashcards
What are the three joints of the shoulder complex?
Sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, and glenohumeral
What is the action of the deltoid muscle?
Abducts humerus (1°), flexes, extends and rotates humerus (2°)
What supplies the deltoid muscle?
Axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral vessels
What is the action of the teres major muscle?
Medially rotates and extends humerus
What supplies teres major muscle?
Lower subscapular nerve and subscapular vessels
What is the action of the supraspinatus muscle?
Abducts humerus the first 15 degrees
What supplies the supraspinatus muscle?
Suprascapular nerve, and vessels and dorsal scapular vessels
What is the action of the infraspinatus muscle?
Laterally rotates humerus
What supplies the infraspinatus muscle?
Suprascapular nerve, and vessels and subscapular vessels
What is the action of the teres minor muscle?
Lateral rotation of humerus
What supplies teres minor muscle?
Axillary nerve, and suprascapular and subscapular vessels
What is the action of the suprascapular muscle?
Medial rotation of the humerus
What supplies the suprascapular muscle?
Upper and lower subscapular nn., and subscapular vessels
What are the muscles of the rotator cuff?
SITS, Supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis
What is the subacromial (subdeltoid) bursa?
Membranous sac containing lubricating synovial fluid
Where is the subacromial (subdeltoid) bursa located?
Inferior to acromion and deltoid but superior to supraspinatus muscle
What is the result of attrition to the spuraspinatus tendon?
The capsule becomes continuous with bursa and is painful and limits shoulder movement
What are the three spaces of the shoulder region?
Quadrangular space, triangular space, and triangular interval
What passes through the quadrangular space?
Axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery
What passes through the triangular space?
Circumflex scapular artery
What passes through the triangular interval?
Radial nerve and profunda brachii artery
What is the superior border of the quadrangular space?
Teres minor muscle
What is the inferior border of the quadrangular space?
Teres major muscle
What is the medial border of the quadrangular space?
Long head of triceps brachii muscle
What is the lateral border of the quadrangular space?
Surgical neck of the humerus
What is the superior border of the triangular space?
Teres minor muscle
What is the inferior border of the triangular space?
Teres major muscle
What is the lateral border of the triangular space?
Long head of the triceps brachii muscle
What is the superior border of the triangular interval?
Teres major muscle
What is the medial border of the triangular interval?
Long head of triceps brachii muscle
What is the lateral border of the triangular interval?
Lateral head of the triceps brachii muscle
What is the action of pectoralis major muscle?
Adducts and medially rotates humerus
What supplies pectoralis major muscle?
Medial and lateral pectoral nn., and thoracoacromial vessels
What is the action of pectoralis minor muscle?
Protracts scapular
What supplies pectoralis minor muscle?
Medial pectoral nerve and thoracoacromial vessles
What are the three main arterial supplies of the pectoral region?
Lateral thoracic (mammary), internal thoracic (mammary), and thoracoacromial arteries
The lateral thoracic (mammary) artery supplies what?
Lateral thorax, lateral pectoral region, and lateral breast
The internal thoracic (mammary) artery supplies what?
Anterior thorax, median pectoral region, and median breast
The thoracoacromial artery sends off what four branches?
Pectoral, clavicular, acromial, and deltoid arteries
The pectoral region is innervated by what four nerves?
Cutaneous, median pectoral, lateral pectoral, and long thoracic nerves
