Integumentary System Flashcards
Eccrine sweat glands are distributed where in the integumentary system?
Throughout skin of most regions of the body, especially in skin of forehead, palms, and soles
What is the location of the secretory portion of the eccrine sweat glands?
Mostly in deep dermis
Eccrine sweat glands excretory duct terminate where?
Surface of epidermis
Eccrine sweat glands secrete what?
Consists of water, ions (Na+, Cl-), urea, uric acid, ammonia, amino acids, glucose, lactic acid
Is eccrine secretion more or less viscous than apocrine sweat gland secretion?
Less viscous
What is the function of eccrine sweat glands?
Regulation of body temperature and waste removal
What is the onset of function for eccrine sweat glands?
Soon after birth
Apocrine sweat glands are distributed where in the integumentary system?
Skin of the axillae, groin, areolae, bearded regions of the face, clitoris, and labia minora
What is the location of the secretory portion of the apocrine sweat glands?
Mostly in the subcutaneous layer
Apocrine sweat glands excretory duct terminate where?
In hair follicles
Apocrine sweat glands secrete what?
Consists of water, ions (Na+, Cl-), urea, uric acid, ammonia, amino acids, glucose, lactic acid, lipids, and proteins
What are the differences in secretions between eccrine sweat glands and apocrine sweat glands?
They secrete the same thing except that apocrine secretes lipids and proteins and is also more viscous
When are apocrine sweat glands stimulated?
During emotional stress and sexual stimulation
What is the onset of function for apocrine sweat glands?
Puberty
What layer does thick skin have that thin skin does not?
Stratum lucidum
What are the layer of tissue in thin skin?
Stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, and stratum corneum
What are the layers of tissue in thick skin?
Stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum
Where is thick skin found?
Palms and soles of feet
Are hair follicles found in thick skin?
No
What do melanocytes do?
deposit pigment in surrounding tissue.
What do merkel’s cells do?
They are involved in acute sensory perception
What are the two layers of the dermis?
Papillary and reticular layers
What does the papillary layer of dermis consist of?
Loose connective tissue
What does the reticular layer of dermis consists of?
Dense connective tissue
What do pacinian corpuscles do?
Involved in sensory; deep pressure and vibratory sense
What type of glands are eccrine and apocrine sweat glands?
Simple coiled tubular
