Which are the primary pelvic muscles?
The ones that make up the pelvic diaphragm:
Levator ani; Coccygeus muscles
What is the origin/insertion of the piriformis:
O: at the inferior anterior aspect of the sacrum
I: the greater trochanter of the femur
Piriformis action
Externally rotates, extends thigh and abducts thigh with hip flexed
Innervation of the Piriforms
S1 and S2 nerve roots
Clinical significance of the piriformis
The sciatic nerves runs through the it.
Spasm will cause pain that radiates down the thigh, but NOT below the knee.
Which axis do the innominates rotate on?
they rotate about an inferior transverse axis of the sacrum
Postural motion occurs around which axis?
Middle transverse axis of the sacrum
Dynamic motion (ambulation) occurs about which sacral axis?
Oblique
