Savarese Ch 5: Scoliosis and Short Leg Syndrome Flashcards
Name a scoliosis curve that is sidebent left
Dextroscoliosis
Name a scoliosis curve that is concave on the left
Dextroscoliosis
The big difference between structural and functional scoliotic curves
A functional curve CAN be partially/completely corrected with sidebending to the OPPOSITE direction.
How do you measure spinal curves?
On x-rays with Cobb method.
Describe the Cobb method
Extend horizontal lines from the vertebral bodies of the exteme ends of the curve.
- Draw perpendicular lines from those lines
- Measure the acute (cobb) angles.
Classify scholiosis based on Cobb measurements
Mild: 5-15
moderate 20-45
Severe >50
When is respiratory function compromised?
Cobb > 50
When is cardiovascular function compromised?
Cobb > 75
What is the most common cause of anatomical leg length discrepancy? (short leg syndrome)
Hip replacement
Describe the innominate rotation with short leg syndrome
short leg: anterior rotoation
Log leg: posterior rotation
Explain how the lumbar spine compensates for a short leg syndrome
Lumbar spine will SB away and rotate toward the side of the short leg
When is a heal lift considered?
If the femoral head difference is > 5 mm (x-ray)
